Amsterdam, July 24 2018 “This man deserves a statue!” Using this slogan, a united working group of Ajax supporters have initiated a fundraising campaign for a statue of Johan Cruyff in Amsterdam.
Since Johan Cruyff passed away (March 24, 2016) there have been several initiatives to honor the legendary number 14. After officials renamed the Amsterdam ArenA as the Johan Cruijff ArenA it is now the fans turn to pay tribute.
With the support of Johan Cruyff enthusiasts and Ajax fans all over the world, the campaign is underway to create a statue as an accessible and permanent tribute in the vicinity of the stadium named after him.
Herjan Pullen, spokesman on behalf of the working group states: “It is beyond any discussion that Johan Cruyff is the best footballer ever produced by Ajax and to come from the Netherlands. He’s an inspiration to all of us. He has put Ajax, the club we are so proud of, on the worldwide map. This man certainly deserves a statue. ”
The strength of the campaign is not from who is organising it but rather who it is being arranged for. Every fan can contribute to the statue in his or her own way. This is similar to the succesful 2011 project, when the statue of Bob Haarms was realized.
In the coming period, attention will be drawn to the campaign in various ways. The campaign will kick-off during Ajax’s home match against Sturm Graz on July 25th.
A donation can be made via the website (www.dezemanverdienteenstandbeeld.nl), but also during a the collection to be held at an Ajax home match during the 2018-2019 season.
The goal is to reveal the statue within the next 2 seasons.
